Southwest of Tiananmen Square (nearest subway station – Hepingmen) is a traditional neighborhood, much of which has been restored. There you’ll find a block or two dedicated to selling traditional instruments. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear some musicians playing.

On the right is a real estate office and on the left a fortune teller. I suppose one can help with the feng shui of the other.
Yes, these are Japanese geishas, but you can buy them in a shop on Qianmen Avenue.
They also sell traditional Chinese dolls from various eras and Korean dolls.
A friend and I explored the New Jewelry Market behind the Pearl Market. We were surprised to find this store which seems to sell furnishings made from zebras and other exotic animals. I can’t get over this and wonder if they’re from real animals.
Staples: rice and oil, found in every kitchen.
